There is a new video game on the market. Surprise! Nintendo calls it “Drawn to Life.” Draw your own life with a virtual stylus; then fight the animated forces of an enemy called “Wilfre.” He and his merry men of menacing monitor mites appear as “evil shadows.” Your computer self and your virtual villagers are called to turn the evil shadows into bright clouds.
Three of our grandchildren spent the holidays with us. Along with their bright, lovely, and loving presence, they brought a video game. They call it “Wii” (as in WHEE!) I call it “Whoops” (as in “That machine makes me feel dumber than an airless inner tube!”). After two humbling defeats at virtual tennis and four virtual bowling fiascos, I felt like I was doing a life sentence in a time warp—without possibility of parole.
Wouldn’t it be great to draw your own world, to replace all the evil shadows with bright clouds? Fact is the shadows aren’t virtual. They’re for real—along with a real enemy force that would seek to turn your New Year into an old familiarity. Quick! Grab the Sword of the Word and run at a right angle.
“Take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you” (Eph. 4:24 MSG).
